The Buncombe County Commissioners have set an ambitious goal of using 100% clean, renewable energy by 2030. With the plummeting cost of solar, solar thermal and wind energy this goal, while ambitious, is entirely feasible.
Solar is now not only competitive with coal, but cheaper in most cases. And breakthroughs in battery technology and storage mean we can achieve our goal of 100% clean energy sooner than anyone thought possible just a few years ago. Because of these advances, this policy will save taxpayers money in addition to helping to preserve the natural beauty of Western North Carolina
Whether it’s switching to LED lights or retrofitting HVAC systems, the Buncombe County Sheriff’s office will be fully committed to these goals under my watch. As a first step the county jail and satellite sheriff’s offices will undergo an energy audit.
